Turmeric is part of the Zingiberaceae plant family that also includes ginger, galangal and cardamom. These tropical, flowering plants develop rhizomes or roots that are widely used in cooking around the world. Turmeric rhizomes are then lightly boiled before dried and sold as a spice.

The plant is renowned for its flavor, color and medicinal properties and has found its way into many of the worlds cuisines. It is used in many masala blends and is a big part of western “curry powder”.

This turmeric is grown by Y.M. Anada Kumara in Wepathana. He has just begun planting turmeric next to his families rice field where a small mountain stream runs by his plantation.

    Turmeric should heated in with butter, ghee or some kind of oil to really release its true flavor and should be used with caution as its slightly bitter character has a tendency to take over dishes.

    The turmeric has a buttery earthy flavor with hints of citrus and is perfect for Sri Lankan cooking with coconut oil and milk.
